Hi Folks! Well, our mission for the two-week trip to Italy, Switzerland and France was to gain some serious weight and we would have succeeded had it not been for endless walks on cobblestone streets and sidewalks. (more...)

A culinary gem of Reston, VA located in a small shopping center off the Dulles Tollroad. MaMaWok offers three menus: Chinese Regular (for American tastes -- Kung Pao Chicken, Szechuan Beef, etc.), Chinese Special (more authentic dishes: Tea Smoked Duck, Pork with Bitter Melon, the fabulous Three Cup Chicken, and so forth), and finally a Japanese menu with Sushi and Sashimi only. Their food is excellent, with all dishes uniformly well-cooked and imaginatively presented. With some of the seafood plates it is easy to go over our budget of $26. for two people, but the dinner entrees average about $11. and prices are much lower at lunch.
One of our favorites is the Shredded Pork with Chili from the Chinese Special menu: julienned fiery green peppers with scallions and wok-fried pork. (Unless you have a fire-proof mouth, tell them to go a little easy on the green chilis.) The recommended house specialty is the Sizzling Beef -- one of several items not available at lunch.
One of the best reasons to include this restaurant in our guide is the menu section entitled "Noodles." These are all various kinds of soups with hand-made wheat flour noodles (made fresh daily) and your choice of chicken, beef brisket, shrimp, or combination seafood. In addition to the main protein the soup also has vegetables: baby bok choy, snow peas, and slices of carrot, water chestnut and bamboo shoot. For $8.95, this generous portion of noodle soup is a complete meal in itself.
Carryout entrees come in round plastic containers that hold large portions -- usually two full dinner-sized servings.
They do a big takeout business, but if you decide to eat there, the small, tastefully-decorated dining room is surprisingly cozy and inviting despite the location in a shopping center. With a fireplace on one wall, a separate sushi bar to the rear of the dining area, and a clever use of floor-to-ceiling room dividers, they certainly make the most of their small space.

Cozy dining room, great authentic Chinese dishes and a Japanese sushi bar make this a gem of a restaurant.
